How Does Connective Therapy Work?

Anyone wishing to achieve and maintain a balanced, healthy, musculoskeletal system needs Connective Therapy.™ Anyone with acute or chronic pain, limited range of motion, blocked circulation, or soft tissue trauma will benefit from Connective Therapy.

Traditional massage can relax the muscles, remove metabolic waste products, and help give a sense of well-being. Connective Therapy™ provides all of these benefits, but also restores structural integration by the physical release of restriction and imbalances due to stress, trauma and overuse and/or misuse of soft tissue.

Appointments
Connective Therapy is located on Queen Anne, Seattle and in downtown Bend, Oregon. Expert massage therapy is available 7 days a week by appointment.

Connective Therapy accepts L&I and PIP claims. Free on-site parking.

Call (206) 378-1712 to schedule an appointment and experience a whole body approach to balance, health, movement, and alignment the Connective Therapy way.

This therapy focuses on restoring the integrity of the facia, the broad sheets of fibrous connective tissue that surround and give support to your muscles and organs.

Fascia is made up of collagen, elastin, and a saccharide gel complex that supports and allows for the muscles to glide independently. Imagine the fasical system as a multi-layered body stocking with fascial sheets wrapping the muscles and organs as they are interwoven throughout your body.

Because of this connectiveness, stress on any area of the body affects every other part of the body. Ideally, when funtioning properly, the fascia is soft and supple, facilitating the movement between all parts of the body.

When the body is faced with muscular overuse, stress, or trauma, the fascial layers become rigid and begin to stick. Muscles then shorten in response to the restricted fascia, which can eventually translate into a variety of complaints, such as neck, low back, or hip pain.

What To Expect

"I am a client of Mimi Polvino, LMP. I am privileged to be so. Mimi comes from a training background in traditional massage having graduated from the Pennsylvania School of Muscle Therapy. With her years (more than 20) in this field, her continuing education in physiology and manual therapy at the Ursa Foundation, she has developed what she calls Connective Therapy. She works on the skeletal structure, facial layer and the muscle layer of the body.

For me with my complicated history of radiation therapy, open heart surgeries, and mastectomy this work has been essential to my ability to receive the maximum of my possible mobility, you see Mimi is able to open spaces with her treatment to and in my body that because of trauma have become hard, locked, and/or rigid. As she works to bring life/mobility/circulation back into those areas, I work to inhabit them. It is hard work and I may close down some, each time however there is more space, more life, more hope and less pain.

I am grateful for the chance to work with this artful practicioner in this manner."
M. Susan Cronin, Ph.D.

Over the years, as an active adult, I have sought out a variety of body work options to enhance my fitness - physical therapy, massage, and chiropractic services. Not until I began as a client of Mimi Polvino's over six years ago did I realize what a difference connective tissue body work can make. And she also makes her sessions a learning experience for my self-improvement and ongoing remediation of habits." Judy Margrath-Huge

"I have been physically active all my life; however, I have been challenged recently with fibromyalgia and arthritis. Mimi's bodywork has helped reduce my muscle and joint pain, increased circulation, and improved my flexibility - so I can keep moving. Her works helps release overall tension and anxiety to help me sleep better. Mimi's proactive and positive influence has been a great support to help me stay active and get fit." Grace Day

"I am pleased to have the opportunity to recommend Mimi Polvino's therapeutic massage treatments. Several years ago I was referred to Mimi by my medical doctor for pelvic tightness and imbalance that was thought to be contributing to chronic pain throughout my body. My doctor stated that Mimi was one of the best for treatment of pelvic stress. And, indeed my experience confirmed my doctor's recommendation. I no longer have lower back, hip, or knee pain.

"But it doesn't stop there. In addition, or because of the pelvic girth problems, I had frozen shoulder in both shoulders. Not only did I have problems with shoulder function, but I had headaches and vision problems. It takes a while to recover from frozen shoulder. Mimi's treatments speed the process and, perhaps more importantly, allowed me to continue with most of my activities, sans tennis, while I was rebuilding flexibility and strength. My headache and vision problems were held at bay, allowing me to continue to work and raise a family. Now my whole family, my husband and two teenage children, see Mimi on occasion to maintain flexibility and to avoid chronic problems that can manifest from minor injuries." Joan O., Ph.D.

We focus on a whole body approach because the location of pain or discomfort doesn't necessarily pinpoint the source of the problem. We individualize the therapy work based on your comfort level and expectation.

In the first session, we determine and perform:

  • Health history

  • Postural assessment to check for balance

  • General massage to assess structural integrity of body

  • Initial treatment of damage and imbalances

In subsequent sessions, we tailor treatment to specific areas of damage or restriction and resore balance and flexibility to the sytem. We work on:

  • Client education in self-help techniques

  • Body awareness education

  • Achievement of structural integration until optimal function occurs

We treat all aspects of the musculorskeletal and neuromuscular systems to include:

  • Chronic pain

  • Sports injury

  • Muscle imbalance
